What are Saunas made from?

Saunas offer a high heat and low humidity, Scandinavian experience. They can be constructed using different types of wood including spruce, cedar and pine. In knot-free pine saunas, the heat causes the resin to ooze slightly from the wood and over time darkens to produce a golden appearance. This then gives the highly stimulating aroma found in the traditional sauna.  In Finland, where the sauna originated, it is very common to use spruce. Spruce is a light coloured wood which doesn't ooze resin but is a good sturdy wood which is ideal for constructing saunas. Another popular choice is cedar. It has a very noticable aroma and has a reddish tint in the wood.

Occasionally pouring a ladle of water onto the heated volcanic rocks on the stove causes an invigorating and short lived steam shock which helps to open the pores of the skin. An ice cold shower is usually taken once the heat becomes sufficient, which is truly exhilarating .
