How We Build Our Steam Rooms

Our steam rooms are constructed using fully waterproof tanking membranes, with moulded acrylic panels, solid surface formations or premium ceramic tile and glass mosaic finishes laid with specialist epoxy grouts. Every surface is fully sealed and non-porous to resist mould and bacteria — essential in a high-humidity environment.

A commercial-grade steam generator is sized precisely for your ceiling height, room volume and intended usage. A polished steam head, integrated control panel, floor drain and auto-clean system are all included as standard. Auto-clean systems are particularly important across the South West, where hard water is common and scale build-up can reduce generator performance.

The steam outlet is positioned on the opposite wall from where you sit, ensuring a comfortable, even steam distribution throughout the room.

The Operating Environment For a Steam Room

A properly installed steam room operates at approximately 45°C with 100% relative humidity. This creates a gentler, more enveloping heat than a sauna, filling the room with warm, humid air. The lower temperature makes steam rooms accessible to a wider range of users, including those who find the intensity of a dry sauna difficult to tolerate.

Is a Home Steam Room Right for You?

A residential steam room is ideal if you suffer from respiratory issues, dry skin or sinus congestion; if you'd like to integrate a wellness feature into an existing bathroom; or if you simply prefer a softer, more humid heat experience over the dry heat of a sauna.

Steam rooms can also be integrated into an existing shower enclosure, making them a viable option in homes where space is limited.

Ongoing Maintenance For Steam Rooms

Once your steam room is installed, we offer ongoing maintenance packages to keep it running efficiently. Our service covers descaling of the steam generator (particularly important in the hard-water areas of the South West), inspection of the heating element and steam head, control panel diagnostics, recalibration of steam nozzles and deep cleaning of all surfaces with non-abrasive products.

Regular servicing is essential for steam rooms: the high-humidity environment means joints and seals need periodic inspection to prevent moisture ingress into surrounding structures.

Keir and his colleague were fantastic throughout. Always on time and did some major renovations to a pool at a property we just purchased. They guided me through all operations and kept me updated throughout. Will be continuing to use Signature Pools.

Matthew Critchlow

Signature Pools continues to provide an outstanding service. On this occasion, Steve came to open my Pool and Hot Tub. He reviewed both with great expertise and set them up superbly for the Summer. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Signature Pools.

Andrew Ridgway

I used Signature Pools & Leisure for the first time this season, and what a fantastic, professional organisation. Reliable & very knowledgeable, I would not hesitate recommending them to look after your pool.

Bernard R Bretagne

We’ve used Signature for nine years to look after our pool and hot tub, and they have always provided fantastic service. We recently had an issue with our hot tub cover ripping, and they came and sorted it straight away, all under warranty. Highly recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a steam room be installed in an existing bathroom?

Yes. Many of our residential projects involve integrating a steam room into an existing bathroom or shower enclosure. We use waterproof cement board, suitable shower floor materials and correct ventilation to achieve a safe, compliant result.

Does a steam room require a vapour barrier?

Yes. Every steam room installation includes a vapour barrier to manage moisture and protect the surrounding structure. This is a non-negotiable element of a correctly built steam room.

How is the generator size determined?

We calculate the correct generator size using the ceiling height, room volume, wall and floor materials and your intended usage pattern. Oversizing or undersizing the generator will affect both performance and energy efficiency.

Where is the steam outlet positioned?

The steam head is typically positioned on the wall opposite the seating area, close to floor level. This allows steam to rise naturally and distribute evenly, avoiding direct contact with bathers.

Can I add features like aromatherapy or lighting?

Yes. We offer a range of upgrades including aromatherapy injection systems, chromotherapy (colour therapy) lighting and integrated audio. These can be specified at the design stage or added to an existing installation.
